IUI is a procedure that directly introduces sperm into a woman’s uterus, aiming to increase the chances of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes and consequently, the egg.
Procedure
The woman’s cycle is monitored to predict ovulation.
Sperm, either from a partner or a donor, is prepared in a lab to concentrate
the healthiest cells.
The prepared sperm is inserted directly into the uterus via a catheter.
Why It Should Be Done
Increases the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes, thus potentially
increasing the chance of fertilization.
Often recommended for cases of mild male factor infertility or
issues with sperm delivery.
Who Should Do It
Couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or women using donor sperm.
Success Rate
Success depends on age, the overall health of the participants, and the quality of the sperm used. Across all patient types, IUI cycles have live birth rates per cycle 15%.
