IMSI is an advanced form of IVF that involves a highly magnified examination of sperm to select the most structurally normal sperm for injection into an egg. This procedure aims to improve fertilization rates by selecting sperm with the highest morphological quality.
Procedure
Similar to IVF, the woman’s menstrual cycle is monitored, and medications are
administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
Mature eggs are collected from the ovaries through a minor surgical procedure.
Sperm is collected from a partner or a donor, and examined
under high magnification to select the most morphologically normal sperm.
The selected sperm is injected directly into an egg to facilitate fertilization.
The fertilized eggs (embryos) are monitored as they develop, and
healthy embryos are transferred into the woman’s uterus.
Why It Should Be Done
IMSI may offer higher fertilization rates by selecting the most
morphologically normal sperm.
It can be particularly beneficial in cases of severe male factor
infertility.
Who Should Do It
Couples facing severe male factor infertility, or those who have had previous IVF failures may consider IMSI.
